Media Mix Compass: Which Advertising Channel Fits Your Goal?

TV or online — which delivers more for your brand? Where should you invest your advertising budget? The Media Mix Compass answers these questions without expert knowledge: choose your campaign goal, describe your situation in a few clicks — and receive a scored recommendation across all media types plus a matching budget allocation.

The compass works with an industry-standard suitability matrix curated by media planners. Data-driven channel selection based on your real performance history is handled by Plan IQ in Media Desk — the heart of Digital Control’s Paid-Media Ecosystem and a full-fledged media buying system.

Media mix and media types explained simply

Two terms behind every channel decision.

What is a media mix?

A media mix is the allocation of an advertising budget across several media types and channels. It defines which share of the budget goes into which type — for example social media, TV, out-of-home or search. A good media mix follows the campaign goal: brand building needs different channels than direct sales. Instead of spreading the budget evenly, it concentrates it on the channels with the greatest impact for the goal at hand.

What are media types?

Media types are the major channel families of media planning: digital (social media, online video, display, search, streaming audio), TV (classic and connected TV), print (newspaper, magazine), out-of-home (classic and digital) and radio. Each type has its own strengths profile across brand impact, sales proximity, reach, targeting precision, speed and budget entry — which makes it suitable for different campaign goals.

Your channel recommendation in four steps

How to use the Media Mix Compass — no media expertise required.

1

Choose your goal: What should your campaign achieve — awareness, image, interest, website visitors, leads, sales, customer loyalty or a time-limited promotion?

2

Describe your situation: Do you advertise to businesses (B2B) or consumers (B2C)? Regionally or nationally? Then fine-tune target group and time horizon.

3

Choose the campaign size: Small, medium or large — the size controls how many channels the recommendation concentrates on.

4

Read the recommendation: You receive a budget allocation with roles (base channel, amplifier, test channel), a rationale and the strengths profile of every media type.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the media mix

It depends on the campaign goal. For brand building and awareness, high-reach media types with strong brand impact such as TV, online video and out-of-home work best. For sales, leads and time-limited promotions, channels with high sales proximity and targeting precision such as search and social media lead the ranking. The Media Mix Compass scores all twelve media types based on your goal, your target group and your campaign size.
Fewer than many people think. Small campaigns are most effective with one or two channels — concentration beats fragmentation. Medium campaigns work well with two to three channels: one focus plus a targeted complement. Large campaigns can combine three to four channels, for example with a reach anchor such as TV and a small test channel. The most common mistake is spreading a small budget across too many channels.
B2B target groups are small and narrow — classic mass media such as TV, radio and out-of-home create high wastage there. For B2B, channels with precise targeting lead the way: search, social media (especially professional networks) and trade magazines. B2C campaigns, by contrast, can benefit from mass reach, particularly for brand building. The Media Mix Compass accounts for this difference with a dedicated B2B/B2C switch.
The compass scores twelve media types using a suitability matrix with six dimensions: brand impact, sales proximity, reach, targeting precision, speed and budget entry. Your campaign goal weights these dimensions; your inputs on target group, advertising region and campaign size adjust the scoring. The result is a suitability score per media type plus a concrete budget allocation with roles — base channel, amplifier and test channel.
No. The compass provides model-based orientation built on industry-standard assessments — it shows the direction but does not replace media planning with real prices, availabilities and audience data. It answers the question “Which media types fundamentally fit my goal?” and is therefore the right starting point before detailed planning begins.
The Media Mix Compass works with a general, experience-based suitability matrix — it does not know your campaigns. Plan IQ is the AI planning agent in Media Desk: it recommends concrete line items based on your own, complete performance history across all channels and tracked metrics — explainable, with adjustable weighting and a direct transition into the media plan. The compass shows the industry-standard assessment; Plan IQ shows what has actually worked for you.
